UBA Plc Bags Africa’s Emerging Global Bank Award

At a glittering ceremony in Washington DC, United States of America, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Nigeria’s largest bank, on the night of Thursday October 18, 2007, bagged the ‘Emerging Global Bank’ Award, beating strong contenders, JP Morgan Chase and Standard Bank in the process.

GTBank, SPDC and OpenText clinch RIMA award

The Records and Information Management Awareness (RIMA) Foundation, recently awarded Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), OpenText among other Information Technology (IT) companies, for their outstanding performances in major Information and Communications Technology (ICT) projects completed during the 12-month period from August 1, 2006 to July 31, 2007.
The ceremony was held in Lagos,Nigeria during a two-day workshop on records and information management in Lagos.
GTBank was awarded for its Guaranty Trust electronic Notification System solution used in Mobile Information Management Project.
The solution is a new notification system, which provides customers with details of transactions on their account(s) via electronic mail and SMS.
SPDC, which clinched two awards, was rated high in its Local Intranet/Extranet solution, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria. The solution allows partners access to company’s network from remote locations.
OpenText was awarded for its Live link ECM solution, which allows customers to do Collaboration Project Management, Collaboration Document Management, Unified Messaging, eLearning and Corporate Training, among others.
Addressing audience at the workshop and award ceremony, President of the Foundation, Mr. Oyewole Oyedokun, explained that RIMA Foundation is an NGO with a mission to promote proper management and security of information in the society for the benefit of humanity and the society in general.
GTBank Now Most Respected Company in Nigeria

Guaranty Trust Bank yesterday won the most respected company award among the 63 leading companies that were surveyed at the PriceWaterHouseCoopers Award held at the Civil Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Bank was proudly announced the most respected company in Nigeria after the Chief Executive Officer of GTBank, Tayo Aderinokun was announced the second outstanding entrepreneur in Nigeria yesterday.
The event was organised by PriceWaterHouseCoopers and BusinessDay newspaper in the year 2005 with the aim of seeking reasons for respect and promoting good corporate governance among CEOs and companies in the country.
GTBank also won the sectoral award for the financial services section while IBTC Chartered Plc and First Bank of Nigeria joined the winning team.

Dangote Emerges Best CEO in Nigeria

Aliko Dangote, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dangote Group of Companies, was yesterday announced as the best entrepreneur in Nigeria at the 2007 PriceWaterHouseCoopers Award organized for the Nigerian entrepreneurs in Victoria Island.

Bank PHB Rewards Winners in Promo

Bank PHB has begun to fulfill its promises of rewarding its customers with millions of naira in the on-going “stash and cash promo” throughout Nigeria. The bank has just rewarded its first set of winners with a million naira and consolation prizes.
Ibrahim Jibo Bulkachulo, a customer in the Bank’s Bauchi branch, came first during the raffle draw and was given N1 million while the remaining 10 winners across Nigeria were given N100,000 consolation prizes each.
Francis Atuche, Managing Director of the bank said the “stash and cash promo” promo is meant to boost the former promo whereby people were encouraged to open an account with the bank. The “stash and cash promo” however allow customers to make more money as they save in the accounts.
To qualify for the draw, customers are to deposit a minimum of N25, 000 in their account every month.
Bank PHB will be giving out N10 billion to customers till the promo ends. Every month, a customer would be given N1 million while 10 others would win N100, 000 consolation prizes across Nigeria.
Queen’s College Calls for Rehabilitation as it Clocks 80

American School plans $20million Campus in Lagos

American International School, Lagos is set to build a $20million High School Campus in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.
The project would be constructed on 40-acres of land.
The project is based on a feasibility study which indicated that an American curriculum High School programme combined with an international Baccalaureate (IB), Diploma Programme would be successful in Lagos community.
The project, which is scheduled to be completed within a year, would commence in October, 2007
Priest Calls for Re-Introduction of Missionary Schools in Nigeria

Professor Anthony Onyeocha, a Catholic Priest, has called on the government to permit religious organization in the running of schools in order to re-construct the falling standard of education in the country.
The Reverend, who is the Parish Priest of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Owerri, Imo state, made this call while acknowledging the State Ministry of Education for the approval given to it to run a college since three years.
Rev. Onyeocha said that the parts played by the Nigerian leaders who attended missionary schools in years past cannot be over emphasized.
He was glad to announce that the first set of students for the Junior School Certificate Examination of the Catholic College would soon be presented.
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education Introduces Graduate Reform Programme

The Federal Ministry of Education has accredited some National Career Centres to retrain and impart skillful knowledge into graduates with the aim of alleviating the problem of unemployment in the country.
In a statement by Mrs. Ibukun Awoyinka, the chairman of one of the career centres known as Afterschool Graduate Development Centre (AGDC), the programme is meant to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship by imparting into the youths; skills that would make them the kind of personality they deserve.
The AGDC chairman said the centre intends to partner with organizations that are committed to human capital development in order to sponsor interested graduates for the programme.
She added that after the programme, graduates would be sent on two weeks training to corporate organization to showcase their potentials.
Meanwhile, the first lady of Lagos state, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola appreciated the initiators of AGDC and urged stakeholders to develop ideas that will keep the youths engaged, in order the reduce the state of insecurity and corruption in the country.
