Thousands stranded in Lagos as Europe closes airports – The Nation

of passengers were stran-ded yesterday at the Lagos Airport, following the cancellation of their flights.

They could not travel because an ash cloud from Iceland’s spewing volcano halted air traffic across a wide swath of Europe, grounding planes on a scale unseen since the 2001 terror attacks. Authorities stopped all flights over Britain, Ireland and the Nordic countries.

With flights in and out of Nigeria cancelled, would-be passengers were left with two options – a refund or waiting for airports to reopen.

All airlines were hit by the massive disruption, with most advising customers not to head to terminals because of the crowd of passengers.

At the Murtala Muha-mmed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, it was near bedlam. Many who turned up for their check-in protocols were disappointed.
