NAFDAC has raised a public health alert over some unregistered Dove soaps and deodorants banned in the EU for containing a toxic ingredient linked to reproductive and prenatal harm.

  • The EU banned Dove Exfoliating Hand Soap (100g) and deodorants due to the presence of BMHCA.
  • BMHCA is linked to reproductive harm, prenatal risk, and skin sensitisation.
  • Affected products were manufactured in Italy and the UK.
  • NAFDAC warns that none are registered or approved in Nigeria.
  • Soaps are also prohibited imports and not eligible for forex support.
  • The public is urged to discontinue use and report adverse effects to NAFDAC.

This alert taps into two urgent public concerns, product safety and the regulation of imports. Many Nigerians trust global brands, but this shows how unregistered imports, even of familiar products, can be risky. It’s also a wake-up call for importers and retailers: compliance isn’t optional. For consumers, especially pregnant women or those planning to conceive, the warning is clear: stay vigilant and stick to verified goods.

Using the wrong product shouldn’t cost your health. If you’ve seen these Dove variants, report them to NAFDAC and spread the word.
