Have we really heard the last of these crises?

Maigairi will be hoping, to be smiling from now onwards.

‘They kissed and made up’,and ‘they sheathed their swords’, these are some of the lines which have been used to allude to the peace that seems to have returned to Nigerian football. But the question is will ‘they live happily ever after?’

A lot transpired from Monday 12,March 2012 which could have marred and to a greater perspective, we believe has come to define football in the country. The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) on Monday held an emergency meeting:firstly to talk about the withheld quarterly allocation by the National Sports Commission(they are always after money) and also to appoint a National Technical Director, coaches for the Super Falcons and the under 20 national teams.

NFF never had a knowledge of what was in store for them that day, in a meeting with the Sports minister. We understand that in the meeting with the sports minister, Mallam Bolaji Abudullahi,he told the NFF executives to resign their positions as board members as directed by the Federal Government of Nigeria, which they vehemently disagreed on.(note: the Sports ministry denies this claim)

Unsatisfied with the outcome of the meeting with the minister, at about 6.00PM the NFF went straight to seek audience with the Presidency and met with the Secretary to the Federal Government Anyim Pius Anyim. It was at this meeting that pictures became clearer for NFF on government’s stand concerning how they run football in the country.

They massively wanted to resign their positions but Senator Anyim Pius entreated them not to,in order to avoid the popular line which we all know the NFF normally holds the country to ransom with ‘FIFA BAN.’

The following day Tuesday, saw another series of meetings between all that matters in football circuit in the country. Senator Pius Anyim, Sports minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi,National Sports commission Director General Patrick Ekeji, met with the NFF executives and the aggrieved parties to settle whatever dispute they have against each other. In a bid to come to a truce, both parties had to shift grounds in order to reach a comprise.

The truce did not come cheap,as the aggrieved parties were adequately compensated. Dr Sam Sam Jaja who challenged his disqualification from running for NPL chairmanship,is expected to be named as honorary member of NFF,his disqualification reversed and he will also get a public apology tendered to him. Nnaji’s ban from football activities will be lifted,he will also have his outstanding referees allowance paid by NFF in addition to a ‘reasonable compensation.’

All these agreement will be met by the NFF, as a condition for both Sam Sam Jaja and Ray Nnaji to withdraw their cases from court. This is the right step in the right direction, but I strongly believe we are setting a bad precedence.

What this simply means is that anybody who has a case against NFF should go to court and box the NFF into an out of court settlement.

Something must be wrong with this NFF to make people always take them to court. Last year alone the Aminu Maigari led board had over eighteen law suits against them. Even a national team coach took the embattled football house to a court over non fulfillment of contractual agreement.

It is turning into a charade as the football house is loosing focus on proper administration of football. 2011 was one of the worst football years in the country as we failed to qualify for any major tournament. Countries lower down Nigeria in the FIFA rankings, have long overtaken us. Is it a surprise that we currently ranked ninth in Africa and fifty seventh in the world?

The Nigeria premier league’s crisis is unending, the Chairman Rumson Baribote is in a face-off with Acting secretary of NPL Tunji Babalola in a battle of supremacy. Where will all these lead us to? Is it not very appalling that clubs are the ones paying the indemnities of referees after each game?

Not that the people going to court are all saints, some are apparently in court just because of what they can milk out of the football house and others out of a genuine cause.

I just hope we have had the last of all these court cases, but I strongly believe we haven’t. It is only left to be seen, what the outcome of the meeting between Nigeria’s delegates and FIFA officials will be.

This could be a brewing storm as we are yet to hear from people like Harrison Jala,Jarret Tenebe etc. Or could they be waiting for an of court settlement as well?

LIB/Susan Peters Faceoff: Apologies My Foot!

When last Tuesday, Linda Ikeji published on her entertainment blog, the picture of Nollywood actress Susan Peters posing with her latest acquisition – a Blackberry Porsche smart phone, nothing in the picture or the accompanying article suggests the slightest intent of malicious attack on the self-perceived superstar nor the cyber war the article would generate.

As it has become synonymous with such posts on LIB, the Susan Peters article turned out not only to be a juicy piece considering the number of hits and comments it generated (some 216 comments as yesterday), but was equally devoured , appropriately digested and judgmentally spewed by readers and lovers of the blog.

Quite unfortunately, Susan Peters retaliatory rants on Twitter over the comments of some of LIB readers and her targeted vituperation against Linda Ikeji, together with the controversial tendered apology of the latter to the former, has questioned the moral ethics of unbiased and factual reportage in journalism.

For starters, if Linda Ikeji was to be a true professional journalist in the real sense of it, she would have understood she owed Susan Peters absolutely no apologies for publishing both the article the comments made by the readers. The tenets of the journalistic trade have it that such actions are solely reserved in cases where the writer has published erroneous or untrue stories.

By quickly aligning herself with Susan Peters and tendering an apology, Linda Ikeji has proven firstly, that she’d rather curry the favour of some selected few to discharging her duties professionally and secondly, has indirectly stated that the opinions and actions of her fans meant little or nothing to her. For the records, the over twenty million readers of the blog made what LIB is today. Least Linda forgets, whatever she publishes on her blog can be readily be sourced on other online and print entertainment platforms.

Back to Peters, the uncouth mannerisms with which she attacked, Linda Ikeji, her sister and LIB readers who by extension can arguably be said to be her fans, further depicts the careless, arrogant and

senseless attitude of some of Nigerian entertainers to their audience and fans. Calling her fans ‘nonentities’ and Linda ‘failed human being’ is the height of being irresponsible. These two set of people by extension are the media and fans that made her! Like the proverbial river that forgets its source, Susan Peters will fade fast into obscurity and irrelevance if not for these category of people. Common sense should have prevailed on her to first reason the consequences of having the paparazzi took the picture or made it public in the first instance.

If Susan Peters understood the essence of PR, an intelligent thing she ought to have done is made her publicist (that is if she has one) handle the matter professionally rather that cursing and raving like the average omo alata over the social media.

As a parting shot, Linda Ikeji should take a clue from Yahoo! News and other reputable media houses that has never for once apologised for their publications simply because of the bruised ego of some affected persons. If there is anyone or group of people she should apologise to, it is her fans whose unwavering readership and support made her blog what it is today. In similar vein, Susan Peters should tender apologies to her fans too for the embarrassment, employ a publicist to manage her public affairs and better still, get herself enrolled in anger management classes.

Nigeria would ‘HERVE had ‘RENARD’

Its been close to two week since Zambia stunned the whole Football fraternity, with their magnificent displays at the just concluded African cup of Nations;leaving tournament favourites:Ivory coast,Ghana and Senegal wailing in their trail. Anyway some school of thought opined that what propelled the Chipolopolo’s to the trophy was the spirits of their lost heroes, who died in the 1993 crash that gulped about thirty lives. Well majority think it is the tactical acumen of their French born coach ‘Herve Renard’ that dragged them practically to the cup.

I happen to belong in the latter, and I scratch my head in nostalgia going back two years ago at the Nations cup in Angola 2010, when the Super Eagles played this same Zambians. You must be a die-hard supporter of the Eagles to think that Nigeria won the game by virtue of Football prowess and artistry rather than sheer luck. They made us labour for 120 minutes and would have knocked us out in regulation time if not for ill fate and the ensued penalty kicks that eliminated them.

Prior to that tournament,Amodu Shaibu’s job was hanging on a thread, and that game with Zambia was plausible enough to justify those clamoring for his head on a plate. After that game, rumours started flying around, that the Nigerian Football Federation were already in contact with Renard. Some welcomed the news, while some kicked against it believing that Amodu’s contract should be honoured ;which stipulates that for qualifying Nigeria to the semi-finals,he should take the country to the World cup. Mind you this gentleman’s agreement was never honoured.

What people saw in that quater-finals and believed that Renard should immediately replace Amodu, was the manner with which relatively unknown players took apart the Super Eagles. The Zambians were technically sound and the Super Eagles were just pedestrian and practically hung on for 120 minutes.

NFF laid off Amodu and earnestly swung into action, hunting for a foreign expatriate to coach the country. With a lot of money bankrolled by sponsors to hire a new coach and also the Presidential Task Force lurking around the corner, the NFF were beclouded and ended with whom everybody seem to aggree left us worse than we were.

Renard left Zambia in April 2010 to pick up a job with the Angolan National team whom did not qualify for the World Cup. Apparently he was hanging on for an offer, from the world cup teams and none came. Nigeria went for Swedish born coach Lars Lagerback who claimed he had a complete dossier of all the Nigerian players in Europe. How the interviewing committee bought that, I don’t know. Ivory coast hired Sven Eriksson, whom I think in the group he was in, did a respectable job. These two Nations were possible destinations for Renard.

Come to think of it, how much was Lagerback paid?okay I understand a whooping 250,000 Dollars monthly for Five months. I strongly believe Renard would have come for less and done a marvelous job, saving us the rigors of hiring three coaches in two years.

His understanding of the game is what stands him out. Is it surprising that Kalusha Bwalya the Chairman of Zambian FA hired him back in October 2011,after getting rid of the Italian born coach Dario Bonetti that saw them through qualification. More like going back to your vomit.

Now Renard is the toast of countries who want a rebuilding of their National teams: Senegal,Saudi Arabia,Ghana etc. anyway Zambia has hurriedly offered him a three years contract. Lets face the fact, the Chipoloplo’s were simply impressive at the last African Cup of Nations. Look at the camaraderie with which they played, no ego show-offs,they played with flair and as a spectator you will get value for money watching them play. They infused passion, throwing bodies at every ball shot towards their goal post, which is essentially lacking in the Super Eagles. If I remember how Musonda wept after he sustained that injury in the Finals, thereby leaving the game so early,I also remember how Taribo west soldiered on to finish the game against Sweden at the World Cup in Japan/Korea 2002 with a strapped head. All these passions are now history. Can you imagine Mikel weeping on account of not helping the Super Eagles in a crunch encounter? I doubt it.

Back to Renard’s qualities, look out how he managed his team after qualifying for the quarter-finals. Obviously some of his players got carried away and reveled in the nights. He carefully weeded out the bad egg and retained some of the players who committed ‘the same’ offence.’ now that is management.

When Sulley Muntari labeled him ‘only a physical trainer,’we all know he was an assistant to Claude Leroy,’coach of Ghana at the 2008 Nations cup, he did not respond but did on the pitch. It takes a coach who knows his onions to leave out one of his finest players on the bench and only unleashed him when he need to.

One of the Zambian players said that the Key to beating Ghana in the quarter-finals was the coach. He told them to try as much as possible to contain the Ghanaians that they will definitely get tired and they did, with the now most sought after striker Mayuka, getting a wonderful goal in the 78 minute, this is called perfect timing. No Nigerian coach has demonstrated such technical input and awareness in years.

After the tournament, Renard said he took time to study why the Egyptians were so successful three times consecutively and found out that the key was in their playing together, which explains why eighty percent of the players are based in Africa, with Congolese club TP Mazembe contributing seven.

Others came from South African PSL clubs including Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars, SuperSport United and Zambian clubs. Only few play abroad: Christopher Katongo even plays in China of all places, while Emmanuel Mayuka plays for Young Boys of Switzerland. Now the Zambians will be among the strong favourites to qualify for the Brazil 2014 World Cup from Africa.

It is really hurting to know that we actually missed out on a goldmine like Herve Renard,we can only hope that Stephen Keshi emulates him as he has shown he would by carrying along the Home-based Eagles in his Programme. He did creditably well by inviting 11 domestic to prosecute the game against Rwanda. Lets see if he will discard them when as people say ‘push comes to shove.’
