Nigeria: BAGCO Bags NSE Merit Award

Nigerian Bag Manufacturing Company Plc (BAGCO), was adjudged the best company for 2007 financial year in the printing, publishing and packaging sector by the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
The company received the accolade and award at a ceremony organised by the Nigerian Stock Exchange recently.
BAGCO indeed pleasantly surprised everyone present to emerge the winner out of three nominees, since it became a public liability company in 2007 and was listed on the Stock Exchange in 2008.
The award was received by the Executive Vice Chairman of BAGCO, Dr. (Chief) Emmanuel Ukpabi.
BAGCO was incorporated in 1964 as a private limited liability company, as a subsidiary of Flour Mills of Nigeria Ltd., now Plc. It commenced operation in 1972 to meet the bagging requirements of its parent company and later extended its services to meet the commercial requirements of external customers from its two plants, one in Lagos and one in Kano, which are capable of producing over 25 million sacks per month.
The company has grown into being the foremost provider of flexible woven polypropylene sacks and other packaging materials like multifilament yarn and webby in Nigeria.
BAGCO recently diversified its operation with the production of top range flexible packaging materials such as laminates, inner liners, shrink-films and stretch films, amongst others. The current volumetric capacity is 3,000mt per year but with plans for short and long term expansion programme.

As part of its aim of fitting the Nigerian market with latest home appliances, Tower Aluminium Nigeria Plc, a leading manufacturer of home appliances in Nigeria, has launched a new set of electrical appliances for its teeming customers.
The new products; rice cookers to kettles, blenders and fans, which were designed in Italy comes in different sizes of excellent packages.

Nigeria: Lafarge WAPCO Turnover Hits N29.3bn

Lafarge West African Cement Company Plc (WAPCO), has announced a 9% increase of its turnover from N31.9bn in September 2007 to N29.3bn in September 2008 financial records.
According to a statement by the company, the profit after tax had a leap by 2.8% from N8.78bn to N9.02bn while the operating profit moved by 0.4% from N8.64 billion to N8.67 billion in the period under review.
Mr. Emmanuel Oloruntoki, General Manager, Lafarge, expressed joy on the financial record which he believed is an achievement despite challenges encountered in the energy crisis in Nigeria.
He declared his utmost confidence in the company’s performance and expansion in the nearest future.
In addition to the comment, Mr. George Lourandos, Managing Director and CEO of Lafarge, said the company has embarked on procedures to loan about 360 euros which will expand the annual cement production to 2.2 million metric tonnes and lift the aggregate Lafarge WAPCO capacity to 4.2 million metric tonnes by the end of the year 2010.

Nigeria: Bagco Turns out N11.8bn

Bagco Manufacturing Company Plc, has turned out a turnover of N11.8 billion, showing a 7% increase as at the last financial year ended March 31, 2008 by as against the N11 billion posted in the previous year.
However, profit before tax of the company fell by 24% showing N920.1 million over the N1.2 billion of the year before while the profit after tax dropped to N303 million from the N1.2 billion of the year under review.

Dunlop Nigeria Plc, the only surviving tyre manufacturing company in Nigeria, has embarked on a strategic redirection of its business in order to restore shareholder value which has been deteriorating as a result of consistent losses in the tyre business.
The Company’s recent N8 billion expansion into the Heavy Truck Radial segment has been frustrated by reversal of Government Policy on tariff for imported truck/bus tyres from 40% to 10% at the beginning of 2007 which has created unfair and inequitable advantages for importers of finished tyres.
