Dana Airlines Limited is set to take delivery of another Boeing MD83 aircraft, bringing to four the total number of aircrafts in its fleet. The airline has also announced that it would commence direct flights from Lagos to Kano with return flights via Abuja in a few weeks.

In the words of Jacky Hathiramani, Chief Executive Officer of Dana Air, “Starting August 17, 2009, business and leisure travelers to the city of Kano will be able to experience the Dana Air hospitality as we extend our operations to the city of commerce. We will offer direct flights from Lagos to Kano and connect the city of Kano to Abuja on the return leg. Also, in a few days, we will take delivery of another Boeing MD83 aircraft to boost operations across all routes.”

Only recently, Dana Air introduced a sixth flight from Lagos to Abuja and added a second flight on the Enugu-Lagos route. “With the addition of another Boeing MD83 aircraft to our fleet, we will be able to further increase our flight frequency on all our routes, to meet the growing demand of our customers. We are also looking at extending our operations to the city of Port-Harcourt sooner than later”, hinted Mr. Hathiramani.

On maintenance of aircrafts in its fleet, Mr. Hathiramani said, “Dana Air has a technical partnership with Iberia and we adhere strictly to the maintenance schedule for our aircrafts as prescribed by the manufacturers and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. More detailed and scheduled checks are, however, carried out at the Iberia aircrafts maintenance facility in Madrid, Spain.”

A subsidiary of Dana Group of Companies, Dana Airlines is Nigeria’s first new world carrier, offering premium services at an affordable rate.

  • It is high time that FAAN regulates the airlines operating in Nigeria adequately. While I applaud the new financing round for airlines that they put the industry through a few years ago and the current drive to enhance air safety with the technical upgrades they are implementing at our airports, they did not follow this up with an equally strict technical audit of airlines. That is why there still exist airlines utilizing aircraft that should not be in service in Nigeria.

In regards to Dana Airlines' claiming to be "Nigeria’s first new world carrier," this assertion is ludicrous. Dana Air and other similar airlines such as Chachangi, Bellview, and Afrijet should be put under the most stringent technical audits available which would ultimately lead to their operating licenses being revoked UNLESS of course they become financially able to bring in new aircraft into the country. This is the regime that FAAN must enforce in order to provide Nigerians with a world class aviation industry.

As it stands, the only three airlines that should be allowed to operate scheduled flights in Nigeria are: Aero, Arik Air, and Nigerian Eagle.
