A section of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters, Abuja was yesterday gutted by fire. The fire which reportedly started at around 9am lasted for about 30 minutes before it was contained by men of the Federal Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA). Reports state that the fire started in the Voter Registry department and may have been caused by an electrical fault. Briefing newsmen on the incident, the Director of Information Communication Technology(ICT) of the commission, Engineer Chidi Nwafor, said no vital document of the commission was affected. The fire incident comes barely 18 months after a similar one occurred in the office of the commission’s chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, causing destruction in the visitors’ room as well as computer sections.
