A man, identified as Ekemini Bassey, has been arrested by the Cross River State Police Command for allegedly killing his father, a retired University of Calabar lecturer, Prof. Nathaniel Bassey, to claim his N40m gratuity. The Punch newspaper reports that the suspect allegedly committed the crime together with his brother, who is now at large. Bassey together with his brother identified as Odiong Bassey, were said to have intimidated their father into borrowing money to meet their demand, but decided to murder him when they learnt he was about to be paid N40 million by the university where he retired so as to claim the benefits.
