10 policemen die in Abuja monthly – Daily Trust

Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner John Haruna said an average of 10 policemen die in Abuja every month.
Receiving members of the Police Service Commission (PSC) who visited the FCT Police Command yesterday, the commissioner said the officers are either killed by mischief makers while on duty or die as a result of duty-related ailments. “The causes of deaths are mostly duty-related,” he said.
The CP said a total of 95 policemen have died in Abuja between January and December 2009. “Out of this number, 16 are female officers while 79 are male. The deaths of the officers will bring agony to their families and will affect policing in the FCT,” he said.
He said the number of police officer in Abuja has been dwindling as a result of their dismissal, retirement, transfer, resignation and death.
