ANAMBRA 2010 : Signs Ominous, Says Achebe – The Guardian
Barely two months and a week to the February 6, 2010 governorship election in Anambra State, all does not seem well for the exercise that may shape the outcome of the 2011 general elections in the country.
This is the verdict of literary icon and international statesman, Professor Chinua Achebe Ñ the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, United States of America.
According to him: “The Anambra elections will provide the first signs of how orderly or disruptive the conduct of nationwide elections in other parts of the country will be.”
However, the author of the classic novel, Things Fall Apart among other great literary works said that, “there are indications that the problems that bedeviled elections in the country in 2007 are still present in Anambra.”
“Already, violence has been reported as the various political actors jostle for control of the state in 2010. The signs are ominous,” he said.
This is ostensibly a reference to the inconclusive primaries conducted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to choose its flagbearer for the election.
