The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Friday accused the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Michael Aondoakaa, of being self-serving and adopting blackmail in respect of the health of President Umaru Yar’Adua.
A statement signed by NBA President, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, stated that only self-serving individuals like the AGF, who benefit from the present state of the nation, use blackmail and abuse to further compound the volatile situation in the country.
The NBA president had in his speech delivered at the valedictory service held in honour of the retiring President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru Abdulahi, said if the President is found to be incapable of discharging the functions of the office, he should be asked to resign.
The statement said those clamouring that the President should resign so that he would have sufficient time to attend to his health meant well and should not be condemned by the AGF.
It said: “To advice, not after the fashion of the politicians clamouring for the President’s resignation, that the President should resign, more importantly, to have sufficient time to attend to his health, is an affirmation of one’s belief in our collective humanity. Only self-serving individuals like the AGF, who benefit from the present state of the nation, employ the weapon of blackmail and abuse to further compound the volatile situation.
