Scores of commuters in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, were on Tuesday stranded as commercial taxi drivers protested the new tax regime introduced by the state government.
The protest, which started around 11.00 a.m., forced students, teachers and other workers to stay off work as commercial activities in the city came to a halt.
Spokesman of the protesting cab operators, Owoyele Ibidunni, blamed the strike on what he called the imposition of “taxes on us even when it was glaring that government has abandoned its role in road management”.
Workers, who were bent on getting to their destinations, resorted to commercial motorcycles ‘okada’, notwithstanding increase in their fares.
Ibidunni said apart from the monthly dues being paid to the coffers of government, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been pressuring them to pay additional N3,000.
