CNPP opposes deregulation of oil sector – The Nation
November 2, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has endorsed the positions of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Civil Society Organisations (CSO) on deregulation of the oil sector.
It said the government has no justifiable reason for the planned action.
The CNPP, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, yesterday, said the usual excuse of the Federal Government about the huge cost of oil subsidy amounts to a ploy to increase fuel price.
“CNPP objects and does not subscribe to the nebulous government argument of subsidy of over N600 billion per annum, but even if there is, what’s wrong if every Nigerian gets N10 per day and N3,650 per annum from an insensitive government that has no social security nor free medicare, even for the elderly,” the group said.
Saying that there is a relationship between deregulation and corruption, the CNPP called on other patriots to support Labour in the move to stop the government’s deregulation plans.
The group described deregulation as “an ill-wind that pauperises the citizenry”.
