Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on Thursday, carpeted the Senate President, David Mark, over his comments to the effect that the removal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu, would not solve the country’s electoral problem.
Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature, who spoke in Benin City, the Edo State capital, as a guest lecturer at a public lecture marking the first anniversary of Governor Adams Oshiomhole‘s administration in the state, had observed, “For me, David is very confused,” on the issue of the INEC chairman, just as he enjoined the Senate president to stop trivialising the very sound arguments of Nigerians in demanding for the removal of Professor Iwu based on incompetence.
However, when contacted, an aide of the Senate president, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan said Senator Mark would respond to Professor Soyinka’s statement at the appropriate time.
Professor Soyinka, who promised to lead the struggle for electoral reform, warned Nigerians against accepting to hold future elections under the present electoral rules, saying the people would be the ultimate losers, if they did.
