Deregulation: No option for now – DPR – Tribune

October 20, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

It seems the Federal Government has chosen to be playing hide and seek on its decision to fix a date for the commencement of the deregulation of the downstream sector of the nation’s petroleum industry, as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has said that the best option to make petroleum products available to Nigerians is to deregulate the sector, saying without that, the citizenry would continue to suffer untold hardship.

Sources in DPR informed the Nigerian Tribune, on Monday, that though the Federal Government had chosen to remain quiet about the actual date the implementation of the policy would commence, the decision to go on with the policy remained irreversible.

“Though, the Federal Government is talking to the Organised Private Sector, the labour unions and other stakeholders on the issue, Nigerians should prepare for total deregulation, because the corruption in the system would not make any other option to work, except to go on with deregulation. Here we are putting necessary machinery in motion to ensure the success of the policy. It may be after all the festive seasons, but surely, there is no going back,” the source noted.
