Federal Govt calls for restraint – The Nation

October 30, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

Information and Communications Minister Prof. Dora Akunyili yesterday urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to exercise restraint over their planned protest against the proposed deregulation of the downstream oil sector.

She said the Federal Government was ready for talks with organised labour on the issue.

Taking to the streets in mass protest, she said, could give hooligans an excuse to engage in illegality at a time the country is successfully implementing the amnesty programme.

In a statement in Abuja, Akunyili said everyone should be concerned about strengthening the country’s democracy.

Her words: “As we are all aware, this is a difficult time for our country; the survival of our democracy should remain our collective responsibility.
