Food crisis imminent – As NEMA alerts to drought in 11 states – Tribune

Scarcity of food is imminent in the country, following the alarm raised by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) that some states in the North may witness drought.
The Northern states are regarded as the food basket of the nation, since most of the foodstuffs come from the region. This revelation followed the warning alert issued by NEMA, at the weekend, over the likelihood of drought in some Northern states, which may lead to scarcity of food in the whole country.
The Director-General of the agency, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Audu-Bida (rtd), disclosed this, at the weekend, after a quarterly meeting of the zonal coordinators of NEMA in Abuja, adding that the cessation of rainfall, as being witnessed in some parts of country, was another factor.
The NEMA boss said 11 states in the Northern part of the country had been sent early warning letters, detailing local government areas that might be affected and the population of the people in the areas.
