Ijaw group condemns MEND over attack on facility – The Nation

July 14, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

The Ijaw Youth Campaign for Peace (IYCP) yesterday condemned the attack on the Atlas Cove Terminal of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

It said the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which claimed responsibility for the attack, was not acting on behalf of the people.

IYCP urged Ijaw to condemn MEND over its recent attacks on oil facilities.

The pro-Ijaw group said MEND’s action did not enjoy the support of majority of the freedom fighters, stressing that just a few radical members of MEND, including Chief Government Ekpemupolo (a.k.a Tompolo), were behind the attacks.

IYPC warned that it would be compelled to forward the names of the militants responsible for the Sunday’s attack to the Federal Government and suggested that their names be removed from the list of those to benefit from the amnesty.
