The leadership of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has instituted a court action against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and the Health Minister over the application of Section 4(2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special provisions) Act Cap R 11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and its subsequent role in the death of the Assistant News Editor of The Guardian, Mr. Bayo Ohu.

NUJ in the suit sought the true meaning, purport intendment and interpretation of the provisions of the section which states that: “It shall be the duty of any person, hospital or clinic that admits, treats or administers drugs to any person suspected of having bullet wounds to immediately report the matter to the Police.”

Joined as respondents in the suit are: The President, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA); its Secretary-General, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN); the Nigeria Police Council and Dr. Lasunkanmi Ismaila Adeyemi, owner of Crystal Hospital Akowonjo, Lagos State, the hospital where the late Ohu was rejected for treatment due to lack of Police report.
