Oil thieves move to Ondo – Presidency worried – Tribune

November 9, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

There appears to be an unexpressed anxiety in the Presidency over the sudden resurgence of the activities of illegal oil bunkerers barely a month after the end of the amnesty period.

Heightening the worries, according to an impeccable source in the Presidency, is the dramatic shift of the nefarious activities of the oil thieves from Bayelsa and Delta states to the riverine part Ondo State. This is even as ex-militant leaders are indifferent to the Federal Government’s desire to bring them in to tackle the problem.

Nonetheless, the Joint Task Force (JTF) says its main mandate and focus remain the three states of Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta.

“For now, the only areas of concentration and attention for the JTF are Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states; besides, the issue of illegal bunkering is being tackled through a multilateral or inter-agency approach.
