Pharmacists seek review of Lagos drug laws – The Guardian

October 30, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

Citing violation of laws on pharmacy practice, members of Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Lagos Branch are seeking an urgent review of all relevant drug laws.

The pharmacists, in a letter to Governor Babatunde Fashola, signed by its Chairman, Felix Anieh, said: “It has become imperative to draw the attention of Your Excellency to glaring procedural defects in tackling some alleged violations by some registered Community Pharmacies in Lagos State.

“On Thursday, October 22, 2009, the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), a creation of the Lagos State Health Reforms Law visited two registered pharmaceutical premises on grounds that the methodologies of their practice exceeded the legal scope. Some of the allegations in one of the premises was that it was monitoring the blood pressure of patients with a sphygnomanometer. Blood pressure monitor in modern times is certainly not the exclusive preserve of hospitals, as even cardiac patients are now advised to monitor their blood pressure on their own.”
