President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, at the State House in Abuja, yesterday honoured 32 corps members who served in the 2008 service year, assuring them of their security anywhere they are posted.
Represented by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, the President, who was himself, one of the pioneer corps members in 1973 and the first Nigerian President to have served in the National Youth Service Corps, said the scheme had continued to be relevant to the development of the country in areas like health, education, community service and legal aids.
Minister of Youth Development, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, in his speech at the ceremony, said that the introduction of the NYSC scheme was, apart from national integration, to instil in corps members, the tradition of industry, selflessness and service to the fatherland.
