Reps query NTA DG over N15.6b U17 World Cup contract – The Nation

December 15, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

The House of Representatives yesterday queried the Director-General of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Usman Magawatta for alleged N15.6 billion contract awards for the upgrade of equipment in preparation for the just concluded FIFA Under 17 World Cup.

The House Committee on Information and National Orientation issued the query at a budget defence session with management of NTA in Abuja .

The committee said the contract breached the 1999 Constitution and the 2009 Appropriation Act because it was done without recourse to the National Assembly.

Magawatta had informed the committee that NTA management obtained the permission of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) during preparations for the tournament to pay N8.2 billion for the contract.

The N8.2 billion paid from its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), he explained, represented 15 per cent of the total contract sum.
