National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Gidado Hamman, said in Ibadan at the weekend that it is now mandatory for every passenger who travels a distance of more than 50 kilometres to pay N50 to the newly-launched Accident Insurance Scheme.
The union in collaboration with some financial institutions in the country packaged the scheme.
Gidado, who stated this while addressing members of the Oyo State chapter of the NURTW on the occasion of the 100 days in office of the present leadership of the union in the state headed by Lateef Salako (aka Eleweomo) added that under the new scheme, passengers are also expected to enter their names in the vehicles Manifest Register for identification purposes in case of any emergency or accident.
The NURTW boss argued further that the scheme was basically to assist both travellers and commercial vehicle drivers, saying that the scheme which was launched on September 23 had already become effective in all the 36 states of the federationand Abuja.
He spoke of benefits to passengers and drivers under the scheme, saying that medical treatment up to N140,000 awaits passengers who sustain injuries in case of accident while the drivers would benefit to the tune of N1 million.
In case of death, a sum of N150,000 would be paid to the passenger’s next of kin or N100,000 in case of a permanent disability.
