Sanusi: I want to be Emir of Kano – Daily Trust

December 18, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

He has no ambition to one day become the president of Nigeria but he could abandon the powerful Central Bank of Nigeria [CBN] governor’s chair to become the Emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi told the Financial Times of London earlier this week. Sanusi, who granted the newspaper a wide-ranging interview, was asked if he wanted to become president of Nigeria one day. He said, “No, I don’t (want to be president).

I have ambitions to be the emir of Kano.” The CBN boss is one of the heirs to the ancient Kano throne, his late grandfather Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi having been the 11th Emir of Kano since the Dan Fodio Jihad of 1804-08.

Sanusi also said he has been enjoying the support of President Umaru Musa Yar’adua in his banking reform efforts. Asked if he still enjoys the support of the president given his illness, Sanusi said, “He’s still the president. I’m assuming that I have the support of the presidency. No one has signalled otherwise. Frankly, for me, I will continue doing what I’m doing and continue to the best of my abilities. Whether the support will continue, I know that up to this point I’ve had no reason to think that that support has waned.”
