Soyinka, Tinubu at Oshiomhole’s anniversary: Iwu must go – The Nation

November 13, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

The campaign for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chair Prof Maurice Iwu’s removal intensified yesterday, with Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and others insisting that he must go.

Speaking during the celebration of the first anniversary of Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole in office, they said there would be no free and fair election if Iwu is not removed.

They were reacting to senate President David Mark’s comments that Iwu’s removal would not solve the country’s electoral problems.

Others are former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu, former Kaduna State Governor Balarabe Musa, former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun. Their stand is that only electoral reforms will ensure Nigeria’s growth.

Soyinka, who delivered a lecture entitled: “Electoral integrity begets governance integrity”, said the people’s right to choose their leaders through the ballot box is not debatable.

For the people to be able to do this in a free and fair election, they need an impartial arbiter, he said.

Those calling for the head of Prof. Maurice Iwu for the crime he is percieved to have committed on the 2007 election should also call on the beneficiaries of the crime to also abdicate their various 'thrones' namely: the precidency, majority of the members of the National Assembly, the Governors etc. If this is not done then punishing the Prof alone is the height of injustice. Can two wrongs make a right? Let the Prof be jare!! and let us move to the next level!!. The electoral reform is the duty of all and no one should be an idle spectator. For even the Justice Uwais recommendations has not been tried to find out whether it will take us to the promised land yet.
