Tension in INEC over mass transfer – The Nation

November 4, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi

There was tension yesterday over the mass transfer of directors at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The authorities sealed off its cash office and deployed riot policemen to guard the place.

The commission had on Monday transferred some of its “disloyal” top shots, including Deputy Director (Cash) Mr. Ezra Tidawa, out of its headquarters in Abuja to various states.

Of the 50 affected directors and staff, Tidawa’s position is considered most crucial. This may have informed the immediate deployment of riot policemen to the Cash Office.

A highly-placed INEC source said: “Those behind the transfer knew very well that Tidawa has all records of strange transactions, curious payments and cash movements.

“So, immediately the transfer list was out on Monday night, three riot policemen were drafted to the Cash Office to be on guard.

“They took the step to disallow Tidawa and his staff from entering the office to retrieve vital records.
