Waziri: I was threatened over Bode George’s trial – The Nation
November 6, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chair Mrs. Farida Waziri spoke yesterday of her battle to prosecute Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Bode George.
She said she received threats and blackmail over the trial of the former chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) who got a two-year jail term alongside five others. Also convicted by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of a Lagos High Court are former NPA chief Aminu Dabo, O. Adeboye, Abdullahi Tafida, Zanna Maiderribe and Sule Aliyu.
George’s conviction would serve as a wake-up call for corrupt judges, Mrs Waziri said.
Besides, she spoke on the court judgment which nullified the deportation of the Vaswani brothers and 32 others. She said the government will contest the verdict.
