The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has discovered 5.2 kilogrammes of white powdery substances that tested positive for cocaine in a consignment of musical instruments at the Cargo Section of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The cocaine, packed in 20 parcels and industrially glued round one of the big drums, was detected during a search at about 12 noon on Saturday. The consignment, with a street value of about N57.2 million, was imported from Brazil, on September 23, 2009, in an Emirate cargo flight.
The acting NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Idris Bello, who confirmed the seizure, stated that it was a product of foreign partnership with the British government, under the ‘Operation West-bridge, that led to the seizure’.
The cargo, with registration number 176 54285420, which arrived on September 23, 2009, was placed under surveillance, but when nobody showed up to clear it after 10 days, it was searched in the presence of security agents at the cargo section.
During the search, the drug was found in one of the big drums. The importers used fake names, addresses and telephone numbers.
