In its renewed campaign to sanitise major towns and cities in Abia State, the government has marked out about 1,500 illegal structures for demolition from February 1, 2010.
Speaking with journalists in Umuahia on Tuesday, Commissioners for Lands and Information, Prince Emeka Nwachukwu and Mr. John Nwokocha respectively, said the illegal structures included banks, hotels, churches, fuel stations and residential buildings in the commercial city of Aba and Umuahia, which, they said, had violated the Town Planning Laws and Land Use Act of 1978.

Three Britons and a Colombian were abducted yesterday in Obehi, Abia State. Their driver and a police corporal attached to the expatriates were shot dead in the incident.
The four expatriate contractors work for Netco Dietsmann, a joint venture between Nigeria State-owned National Engineering and Technical Company and Dutch maintenance company, Dietsmann.

A man believed to be a pensioner, yesterday collapsed and died at the gate of Abia State Sub-treasury. Unconfirmed reports said the man collapsed and died at the gate of the Sub-treasury at about 8.30am.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been in Abia State since last week, in connection with an alleged N3.3 billion contract scam rocking the state.
The commission’s spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, confirmed the presence of the operatives in the state, but declined comments on their mission.

The association said that the Federal Government has been insensetive to the rot in the university system.

The Abia State government says it will demolish over 40 per cent of petrol filling stations across the state operating without approved plans.
This was announced by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands and Survey, Vincent Nwaogwugwu during a Press briefing in Umuahia.
