The contractors handling the dredging of River Niger, Messrs Von Oard, has said work will commence in two weeks.
The Federal Government had on December 1, 2008 signed a N34.8 billion contract for the dredging of the lower Niger. The project, which covers about 572 kilometres, stretches from Warri in Delta State to Baro in Niger State.
The then minister of transportation, Mrs. Deziani Allison-Madueke, who signed the agreement on behalf of the government, said the project was divided into five sections and awarded to five different contracting firms to ensure that they were completed within the stipulated time.
Speaking with journalists in Lokoja, Kogi State on Tuesday, the firm’s Project Manager, Mr. Tim Helbo, disclosed that the equipment needed for the execution of the project had been delivered at the dockyard of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in Lokoja.
Helbo said the project would commence after President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s flag-off.
