Yar’Adua’s return throws presidency into confusion – The Punch

The Presidency was in disarray on Wednesday following President Umaru Yar’Adua’s unexpected return to the country earlier in the morning.

At the time of filing this report (5.30pm), Acting President Goodluck Jonathan and the ministers were yet to see Yar’Adua.

Our correspondent learnt that Jonathan only heard that Yar’Adua was back through the President’s aides.

Also, rather than see Yar’Adua, Jonathan was billed to have a meeting with the First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua, for undisclosed reasons, on Wednesday evening.

Signs of confusion were evident in a statement from the President, which referred to Jonathan as vice-president instead of Acting President.

Admitting that Yar’Adua was still recuperating, the statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, said Jonathan would “continue to oversee the affairs of state.”

I’m not fit enough to work, says Yar’Adua – The Nation

The President does not seem set to resume work, it emerged yesterday.

He has directed Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to “continue to oversee the affairs of state” as he recuperates, presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi said.

But, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) could not meet yesterday as Jonathan resolved to seek audience with First Lady Turai Yar’Adua before taking any action.

Members had gathered at the Council Chambers for the meeting when Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Mallam Yayale Ahmed told them that it had been postponed at Jonathan’s instance.

Jonathan told the ministers that he would see them after meeting with Mrs Yar’Adua and the six-man fact-finding mission to Saudi Arabia.
