Police recover N160m Indian hemp consignment in Ibadan – The Punch

The Oyo State Police Command, on Wednesday, raided a residential building in Aba Seke, Isebo, on the outskirt of Ibadan, where Indian hemp conservatively valued at N160m was recovered.

The prohibited drug was concealed in 596 cellophane bags and kept in two rooms in the bungalow, without a trace of the owners of the building or the suspected peddlers.

The sparsely-furnished living room and a third room of the building, however, had household property indicating that there were people residing there.

Acting on a tip off, the police took possession of the building in the early hours of Wednesday, with residents of the remote area fleeing in different directions to evade arrest.

It was not clear why the police did not mount surveillance on the area for a few more days to ensure that the dealers of the illicit drug were apprehended red-handed before sacking the building.

The officers and men of the Ekiti State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the weekend destroyed a 35-acre Indian hemp plantation at a forest in Ise-Ekiti, the headquarters of Ise/Orun Local Government Area.

Addressing reporters at the weekend, the State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Ben Ikani, said the feat was achieved under a new operation code-named “Ekiti Operation Burn the Weeds 2009″.

Ikani said a Special Strike Force constituted by the command discovered the plantation after two weeks of surveillance.

He said the feat was achieved after his men and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) slept in the bush for days.I
