Protest yesterday trailed the withdrawal of the Joint Task Force (JTF) from Edo State ahead of a fresh election ordered into the state House of Assembly by the Court of Appeal next Saturday.
Civil society groups, students and traders took to the streets to protest the withdrawal of members of the armed forces from the state’s joint police and military security outfit, “Operation Thunderstorm,” alleging that their removal was to enable politicians to bring arms and ammunition into Etsako Central Local Council where the fresh election will take place.

The political situation in Edo State got feverish yesterday as Governor Adams Oshiomhole raised an alarm over an alleged order by the Minister of Defence, Major-General Godwin Abbe (rtd), withdrawing soldiers of the Joint Task Force (JTF) code named “Operation thunderstorm” from the state.

Militants raised the alarm yesterday that the celebrated ceasefire in the Niger Delta was under threat.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) accused Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger Delta of invading Kula in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State around 6am. The troops, MEND alleged, were searching for hidden weapons.

There appears to be an unexpressed anxiety in the Presidency over the sudden resurgence of the activities of illegal oil bunkerers barely a month after the end of the amnesty period.
Heightening the worries, according to an impeccable source in the Presidency, is the dramatic shift of the nefarious activities of the oil thieves from Bayelsa and Delta states to the riverine part Ondo State. This is even as ex-militant leaders are indifferent to the Federal Government’s desire to bring them in to tackle the problem.
JTF destroys 150 illegal refineries – Vanguard

Sector I Command of the Joint Task Force (JTF) has destroyed 150 illegal refineries and arrested 50 suspected oil thieves, including a Lebanese national and three oil vessels in Delta State.
The JTF also recovered over 2,000 drums of illegally refined petroleum products and 16 fuel tankers loaded with refined products worth millions of naira and 10 other assorted cars and buses used for the illegal operations.
