Attempts by the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, to have the corruption charges filed against him quashed failed on Wednesday, as Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, OAU Quarters, Abuja, ruled that the trial must continue.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had preferred an eight-count charge of criminal conspiracy and abuse of office against the former FCT minister.

The judge had ruled previously that the EFCC should paste charges against the former FCT minister on the wall of his residence at 12 Mambila Street, Maitama, Abuja, following his failure to make himself available for service of court papers.

Two other persons, who are being prosecuted alongside el-Rufai, are Altine Jubrin, former Director General, Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) and Ismaila Iro, former General Manager, AGIS. The summons against the duo had long been served on them.

Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Lawal Gummi, on Wednesday, ordered the Federal Government to pay an indigenous construction company, Bulet International Limited, N150 million, for illegal demolition of its property by the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority (FCDA).

The property, located behind the Phase 1 of the Federal Secretariat, was demolished during the tenure of former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.

Justice Gummi described the demolition as barbaric, given that he had earlier issued an interim order restraining the former minister from demolishing the property serving as construction yard for the company, pending the determination of the suit in which judgment was entered yesterday.

The presiding judge also ordered that 10 per cent of the judgment sum should come on top of the judgment sum yearly until the Federal Government paid up, with the interest counting from yesterday.

The judgment sum was, however, a far cry from the N3 billion being sought by the plaintiff, with one of the counsel for the plaintiff giving an indication that the judgment might be appealed despite being in his client’s favour.

Signals emerging from Washington, United States, and Nigeria’s seat of power in Abuja are suggestive of imminent extradition of the controversial former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, given the reported recent positive disposition of the United States of America to the request.el-Rufai, who has engaged the Nigerian government under President Umaru Yar’Adua in a sustained battle of wits, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for an alleged N32 billion scam and fraudulent allocation of land while in office.

Nigerian Tribune reliably gathered from sources in Abuja and Washington that fears had gripped the camp of the former minister after it established that the American government had in recent times, been more receptive to the extradition request by the Nigerian government.

The el-Rufai camp was said to have been deriding the moves by the Nigerian government to extradite the former minister until it was discovered that top officials of the American government had been engaging their Nigerian counterparts in secret meetings over the extradition request.
