Nigeria may be plunged into total darkness as from Saturday, as Shell Petroleum Development Company gives a notice of its plan to shut down three critical gas plants that supply dry gas to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

The December deadline promised by the Federal Government to generate 6,000 megawatts of electricity supply may have eventually been a mirage as only 3,500 megawatts have so far be generated.
The indication to this was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Dr Olanrewaju Babalola, in an interactive session with newsmen during his official visit to Gereku power station located at Ajaokuta, Kogi State, at the weekend.

Minister of Power, Dr Olaranrewaju Babalola, said gas supply to power stations round the country has improved. And with the current situation the projected 6000 megawatts was realisable.
The Minister who made the observation after his inspection of Okoloma gas and power station and Afam power station said it was a heart warming development.

Minister of Power, Dr. Lanre Rilwanu Babalola, has put electricity generation in the country at 2,900 megawatts (MW), while total available generation capacity has hit 5,300MW.
He said that this was accomplished on account of the “synchronisation” of the repaired Unit III at the Shiroro Hydro Dam with the Sapele power station and the national supply grid system.

Three days after the Executive Director, Operations of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, Mr. John Ayodele, was kidnapped in Abuja , he is still being held by unknown persons.
The Minister of Power, Dr. Lanre Babalola, confirmed the development on Sunday.
