The Federal Government has commenced payment of arrears of allowances owed former militants in various camps in the Niger Delta region. Each of the former militants is entitled to N65,000 per month as stipend for the period of rehabilitation. There are two rehabilitation camps in Rivers and Delta States.

The Federal Government, yesterday, commenced the post-amnesty programme in the Niger Delta region as it directed 3,000 former militants who had accepted the amnesty offer to report to camp between now and November 11 towards rehabilitating them just as the government approved N2 billion for immediate construction of physical development projects in the region.

A ten percent equity holding in Nigeria’s oil industry is to be given to the people of the Niger Delta region in furtherance of President Umaru Yar’adua’s program of restoring peace to the restive region, the Financial Times of London [FT] and the Reuters news agency separately reported yesterday. While Reuters attributed the story to an unnamed senator, FT named its source as Yar’adua’s Adviser on Petroleum Matters Dr. Emmanuel Egbogah.

The Federal Government’s offer of amnesty to armed militants in the Niger Delta region, which lapsed at midnight on Sunday, October 4, turned out to be far more successful at this stage than most observers had thought possible when it was first unveiled last June.
