The call by former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on President Umaru Yar’Adua to resign as president if his health is failing him has widened the gap between the president and his predecessor, even as it has deepened the suspicion of Yar’Adua’s loyalists and a section of the North about a Jonathan presidency.

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has faulted the resolution by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) that President Umaru Yar’Adua, was capable of performing his duties.
The group in a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Osita Okechukwu and made available to the Nigerian Tribune, in Abuja also described FEC’s position as “the height of exhibition of naked self- interest and orchestra of deception” and challenged it to publish forthwith the latest medical report upon which they based their declaration.

The Saudi Arabian Embassy in Abuja yesterday denied claims by members of the House of Representatives’ 7-member panel that their proposed trip to visit President Umaru Yar’adua in Saudi Arabia was delayed by the Embassy’s failure to issue them with visas. The Charge d’Affairs in the Saudi Embassy Jalal Hassan O. Almagraby said the embassy has not received any visa applications from the House members.

Agitation raged in the Senate, yesterday, over the continued absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua, with a group of senators poised for a showdown with its leadership and President Yar’Adua.
Besides a motion seeking to urge President Yar’Adua to temporarily cede executive powers to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, the senators are also considering a shutdown of the Senate to drive home their frustration.

Hours after the ailing President Umaru Yar’adua was heard on the airwaves of the British Broadcasting Corporation [BBC] granting a brief but halting interview, the House of Representatives yesterday resolved to constitute a 7-man delegation to visit him in Saudi Arabia in order “to convey the members’ goodwill message and discuss other issues of national importance.”
