The Sokoto State High Court yesterday remanded former state Governor Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa and eight others, including some top officials of his government, in Sokoto Prison custody until Monday, December 21, when a formal application for his bail would be entertained by the Court. Bafarawa, his brother and former officials were charged with defrauding the Sokoto State government of up to N15 billion in his years as governor.

Just as the State Security Service (SSS) has swung into action, probing the activities of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the recently ended U-17 World Cup in Nigeria, world football’s governing body, FIFA’s partner, Hyundai, has tracked down some of the 74 cars it supplied for the competition, which allegedly were shared and driven away by some officials of government.

Eight children travelling with their father and uncle, a deputy director in the State Security Service [SSS], drowned on Monday afternoon when the car in which they were travelling on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway somersaulted and fell into a river. Witnesses said the accident, which occurred at about 6.30pm, was caused by a burst tyre. The children’s father was identified as Alhaji Umar Awwal.
