Gunmen kidnap UNIBEN staff in church – The Guardian

The peace that was experienced in Edo State during the Christmas and New Year festivities was short lived yesterday as a female member of a new generation church and a staff in the Bursary Department of the University of Benin, Mrs. Sera Longe, was said to be abducted by unknown gunmen.
The woman was said to have been kidnapped on Sunday morning while she was entering the church premises around Ugbowo area of Benin, the state capital.
The abduction was carried out in spite of heavy presence of members of the state’s joint anti-crime outfit, “Operation Thunderstorm” which was recently fortified with additional patrol vehicles fitted with communication gadgets.
The victim’s husband, The Guardian gathered, also works in the university as a lecturer.

The purchase of vehicles worth N48 million by the management of the University of Benin has landed it in trouble as operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commi-ssion (EFCC) have in the last one month been regular visitors to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on fact finding missions.
It was learnt through an official of the university, who pleaded anonymity, that the EFCC were interrogating some officials of the university over purchase of vehicles for some of the university officials totaling N48 million.
According to the official, the EFCC operatives commenced the investigation based on a petition written by some staff of the university against the authorities.
