KAJURU, NIGERIA – Reports confirm that three police officers have been killed by gunmen in Northern Nigeria.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Aminu Lawan confirmed that that there was an attack on the police force early Tuesday. However, he said only two officers were killed in the shootout that occurred when the police officers attempted to reprehend armed robbers.

As it happened, the police officers chased the robbers to the police station, and eyewitnesses – two constables who managed to escape the ensuing violence – say that the robbers came in vehicles and sophisticated fire power, shooting at the police station and killing the officers on duty.

The constables report that a sergeant and a superintendent were killed and one female officer has been hospitalized as a result. The witnesses gave their testimony with the condition of anonymity because they are ordinarily not permitted to talk with journalists.

Meanwhile, in the course of an Islamic uprising in northern Nigeria, extremists have attacked and killed police officers and freed the prisoners.
