World basketball governing body, FIBA has fined Nigeria 100,000 Swiss Francs for failing to honour last year’s world U-19 championship for women which took place in Chile in July, LEADERSHIP SPORTS gathered. FIBA said the reasons Nigeria gave for missing the tournament was not tenable. The decision was convened weekend at a meeting of FIBA Africa presidents of zones and central board meeting held in the Ivorian capital, Abidjan.

Nigeria failed to honour the tourney citing financial constraints last year, a move that did not go down well with the FIBA authorities. The team prepared in France where they played warm-up games against Brazil, China and France, one of their Group B foes. The 2011 FIBA U-19 world championship for women was held in Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas, Chile, between 21 and 31 July.
