Ever since Pope Benedict XVI announced his sudden resolve to resign, he has been scheduled to make his first open appearance today at the Ash Wednesday service as he oversees his regular congregation.
Later today, the pope will give a lengthy sermon on the importance of observing lent as Christians. This year the Vatican announced at the last hour that the service would be held at the St. Peter’s Basilica due to the huge crowd that has been anticipated. Apart from today’s service, the usual location for the yearly Ash service is the church on Rome’s Aventine Hill.
