MTN Nigeria has apologized after a 200% price hike on its 15GB data bundle sparked public outrage. Customers slammed the move on social media, prompting MTN to issue a casual apology, urging forgiveness. The Nigerian Labour Congress condemned the hike, while other telecoms may follow suit.
MTN Nigeria has issued a public apology to its customers following backlash over a sudden 200% price increase on its 15GB data bundle. The price hike, which raised the cost from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, triggered widespread outrage on social media, with users criticizing the abrupt change.
In a message shared online, MTN acknowledged customers' frustration, adopting a casual and apologetic tone. The company admitted its misstep, stating, “We could give reasons, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. Let’s just say na mistake.” The telecom giant urged subscribers to “forgive and forget,” emphasizing its commitment to customer satisfaction.
The increase follows the Nigerian Communications Commission's (NCC) approval of a 50% telecom tariff hike in January. While MTN is the first to adjust its pricing, industry analysts expect competitors like Airtel and Globacom to follow suit soon.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the move, calling for an immediate reversal of the hike. Consumer advocacy groups also argue that the price change could make internet access unaffordable for many Nigerians.
Despite the apology, public sentiment remains mixed, with many demanding a reconsideration of the new pricing structure. As Nigeria grapples with rising inflation and economic challenges, the cost of mobile data remains a crucial issue for millions of users.
