Peter Obi criticized Nigeria's leadership during Nexford University's graduation ceremony, claiming there are more "Yahoo people" in government than outside. He urged graduates to foster societal change, emphasizing integrity and accountability in leadership. Obi also lamented the impact of poor governance on Nigeria's youth, calling for transformative leadership.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, has sparked discussions with his remarks about corruption in Nigeria. Speaking at Nexford University's 4th graduation ceremony, themed "Lead the Change; Ignite Your Future," Obi highlighted the prevalence of dishonest practices within government institutions, claiming there are more "Yahoo people" in government than outside it.

He critiqued the state of leadership in the country, accusing officials of contributing to widespread corruption and mismanagement. “When we discuss vices, it’s not just about Yahoo boys. The real problem lies with those in power who exploit resources. We’ve turned the entire nation into a crime scene,” he stated, emphasizing the need for integrity in public service.

Obi encouraged the graduates to prioritize character and ethical leadership, urging them to use their education to drive societal transformation. He remarked, “Leadership isn’t rocket science—it’s about having the character to make the right choices. You have the potential to ignite change.”

The former Anambra governor also lamented the consequences of poor decisions by past leaders, which he argued have disproportionately affected younger generations. He called for a paradigm shift in governance and a collective effort to rebuild Nigeria’s foundation.

Obi’s comments have reignited the national conversation about corruption and leadership accountability, urging citizens, especially the youth, to take active roles in shaping the country’s future.
