Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has strongly condemned her six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate, declaring in a viral video that the decision was unjust and would not stand.
The Kogi Central lawmaker was suspended following a heated confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Rules, and Code of Conduct recommended the disciplinary action, which was upheld by a majority vote on Thursday.
As part of the suspension, Natasha will retain her salary but will be barred from the National Assembly premises, with her security details also withdrawn.
Her suspension comes amid escalating tensions after she accused Akpabio of victimization, alleging that he targeted her following her refusal of his alleged sexual advances. Akpabio has denied the claims, calling them baseless.
Despite her suspension, Natasha resubmitted her petition against Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary, prompting the Senate to pledge an investigation into the allegations. However, her defiant statement in the viral video—“This injustice will not be sustained”—was cut short as her microphone was abruptly turned off.
The controversy has sparked protests in Abuja, with supporters and critics of Natasha clashing over the Senate’s decision. Many Nigerians, including civil society groups, are calling for a transparent probe into her allegations.
