President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has addressed the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians, acknowledging the hardship caused by ongoing reforms. Speaking at the 48th convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Tinubu, represented by Tope Fasua, assured Nigerians that the challenges were part of a necessary process for sustainable national development.
The President emphasized that the hardship was "unintentional" and expressed empathy for the suffering of Nigerians, stating, “I do not take pleasure in inflicting pain on Nigerians.” Tinubu further explained that his administration inherited both the assets and liabilities of previous governments, and while he was aware of the difficult economic situation, he remained committed to navigating the country through its challenges.
He urged Nigerians to cooperate and endure these tough times, assuring them that there would be long-term benefits. “There is light at the end of the tunnel,” he said, encouraging citizens to remain hopeful. Tinubu also stressed that his government was not assigning blame for past mistakes but was focused on correcting them for the betterment of the nation.
The event also saw the conferment of honorary doctorates on several distinguished individuals, including the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola, among others. The Chancellor of OAU, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, emphasized the importance of investing in education for national development.
