A Chinese businessman seen in a viral video handing ₦5,000 to Nigerian police officers claims it was a gesture of appreciation, not a bribe. While the public reacted harshly, calling out misconduct, the Nigeria Police Force condemned the act and pledged sanctions against the involved officers.
A Chinese businessman has addressed the controversy surrounding a viral video in which he was seen handing money to several Nigerian police officers, denying that the action was a bribe.
The footage, which quickly spread on social media, showed a line of officers receiving ₦5,000 cash each from the man during a public interaction in Akure. In a statement released afterward, the businessman explained that the money was offered as a customary sign of appreciation for what he described as the officers' respectful conduct and professionalism.
According to him, the gesture was entirely transparent, with no secrecy or improper intent involved. “This is a cultural practice where I come from — to express gratitude to people who have been helpful or shown respect,” he said. He added that the incident was misinterpreted and apologized for the unintended public reaction.
Despite his clarification, the video has drawn sharp criticism from the public, with many expressing disappointment in the conduct of the officers. Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate, labeled the behavior as disgraceful and reflective of deeper issues within the police system.
In response, the Nigerian Police Force issued a statement condemning the officers' actions and promising internal disciplinary measures. The force reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and insisted that such conduct does not align with its core values.
The Chinese delegation involved in the event expressed regret over the incident but reiterated their dedication to maintaining strong ties with Nigeria.
