Senate President Godswill Akpabio has taken aim at Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara, highlighting his challenges in managing political tensions within the state. Speaking at an event in Port Harcourt celebrating FCT Minister Nyesom Wike's 57th birthday, Akpabio stressed the importance of maintaining robust ties with the legislature, reflecting on his tenure as Akwa Ibom State governor.
“Governors must form strong alliances with their legislative counterparts,” Akpabio stated, adding that legislative discord could destabilize governance. Sharing his strategy, he recounted regularly engaging with lawmakers to ensure harmony during his administration.
Akpabio expressed disappointment in Fubara’s failure to reconcile with the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, despite the state’s significant resources. He remarked, “With Rivers State's resources, failing to sway even one opposing legislator signals a flaw in political strategy.”
Criticizing the politics of betrayal, Akpabio noted its destructive impact on governance and succession planning. He urged leaders to prioritize continuity, warning against undermining prior achievements.
Praising Wike’s legacy, Akpabio lauded his transformative contributions to Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, describing him as a leader committed to progress. “The bridges you’ve built reflect your dedication to unity and development,” he said.
In response, Wike dismissed threats to his leadership, stating, “Nobody can intimidate me. Politics will be addressed at the right time; now, it’s all about projects.”
