The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to launch a conditional cash transfer policy for 15 million households on October 17th, 2023, according to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu. She revealed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
Edu explained that the ministry has been working with stakeholders across the country to establish a credible register of beneficiaries. The program aims to provide financial support to Nigerian households falling within the category of those living under $1.95 a day
She emphasized the importance of thorough verification to ensure that the beneficiaries are authentic and deserving of the assistance. The government is conducting a verification exercise in collaboration with state cash transfer offices and governors who oversee steering committees.
Acknowledging that some individuals on the register may have passed away or improved their economic situation, Edu stated that the verification process is intended to update and clean up the register. It includes cross-referencing with data like Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) and National Identity Numbers (NIMs) and capturing biometric information of the household heads for easy identification.
